BUET Hosts 13th ICECE 2024: Focus on Semiconductor Industry
The 13th International Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (ICECE 2024) is underway at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The three-day event began on Wednesday, featuring a panel discussion titled “Semiconductor Industry in Bangladesh: Opportunities and Challenges.” During the session, the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA) announced its ambitious target of earning $1 billion in revenue from the semiconductor sector by 2030.
According to a presentation by BSIA, by 2030, 62% of the world’s semiconductor demand is expected to be met by Asia-Pacific countries. The global semiconductor market is projected to reach a valuation of approximately $1 trillion. Citing government support as a key factor, the presentation highlighted that countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have achieved significant advancements in the semiconductor industry. To meet its 2030 revenue goal, over ten Bangladeshi companies are already working in areas such as chip design and packaging, which are expected to generate substantial foreign exchange earnings.
M. A. Jabbar, President of BSIA, remarked, “Entrepreneurs in Bangladesh have already begun efforts to develop the semiconductor industry. Our goal is to export $1 billion worth of products by 2030. For this, we require policy support. Many Asian countries have progressed significantly in the semiconductor sector, and with government assistance and policy backing, we believe we can play a vital role in the national economy.”
BUET Professor Nadim Chowdhury commented, “The semiconductor industry is seeing diverse growth due to automation and artificial intelligence. Entrepreneurs in Bangladesh have started working in this sector. Our universities need to focus on developing skilled human resources to support this industry.”
Other panelists included BUET Professors A. B. M. Harun-Ur-Rashid and A. S. M. A. Hasib, as well as Mohammad Mojibul Haque, Chairman of Siliconova.
The conference has highlighted the growing potential of the semiconductor industry in Bangladesh and its ability to become a key contributor to the country's economic development.
